FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Caleb Swanigan and his size 18 shoes have tread around the state this summer, and the 6-foot-8 Homestead is now one of the most talked about players in the nation thanks to some stellar performance at the 2014 Nike Peach Jam.
"Unquestionably my margin shooting and getting in better shape are what I've
.been focusing on this particular summer," Swanigan told WANE-TV on Monday.
Swanigan had dominanting performances before a number of school coaching staffs - including Kentucky and Duke. Based on multiple reports on Monday night, the Wildcats only put a scholarship offer on the table. Swanigan notes that Cal and trainers from Virginia Tech were observing him at the Peach Jam. Michigan State, Indiana, Kansas, Purdue, Notre Dame and Georgetown are one of the other major systems that have offered. Many consider MSU to be the frontrunner, but Swanigan tells WANE he doesn't necessarily have a front runner right now.
"Michigan State - the reason folks think I'm going there is they do not recruit a lot of men," Swanigan said on Monday night. "They pick the men they wish to recruit and they focus on them, and I've been fortunate to be one of their focuses. Thus, once they're on you lots of people are like, 'Oh, Michigan State is the place where he needs to go.' Right now, I'm taking it all in. They are not a forerunner or anything, but they have definitely shown a lot of support and been among the frontrunners of my recruiting."
It's been a busy summer for Swanigan, who tearing up the AAU circuit, has experienced the classroom. Earlier this summer Swanigan reclassified to 2015 in the class, meaning he is going to be a senior coming school year. Moving
.up has demanded additional work that was academic to be completed by Swaningan.
His next experience begins on Wednesday where Swanigan one of 36 players when he leaves for Colorado Springs. If Swanigan makes the 12-man team he will not arrive back in Fort Wayne until August 15 and will travel to Dubai for the U17 FIBA World Championship.
Swanigan averaged 20 points a 12 rebounds at Homestead last season as a sophomore.
